Nasal Surgery FAQs

What is nasal surgery?
Nasal surgery, or rhinoplasty as it is also known, is a procedure which can reshape the nose, improving both aesthetic and functional problems.

What improvements can be made to the nose with nasal surgery?
Nasal surgery can achieve a variety of improvements to the nose including a reduction or increase in overall size, a change in the shape of the tip or bridge, a narrowing of the span of the nostrils, and a change in the angle between the nose and upper lip.

Who is a candidate for nasal surgery?
Candidates for nasal surgery include men and women who are looking to improve the appearance or function of the nose. It's also important that patients be in good physical health, psychologically stable and have realistic expectations. Surgery is best performed after patients have completed their growth spurt, usually around age fourteen or later.

At what age can nasal surgery?
Nasal surgery can be performed once the patient has completed their growth spurt. This usually happens around age fourteen or later.

What occurs during a consultation for nasal surgery?
During the consultation for nasal surgery, you will meet with either Dr. Duboys or Dr. Sirota. After carefully examining your nose, the doctor will discuss your expectations and the possibilities available to you. All details of the procedure will be explained and any questions that you have answered.

Where is nasal surgery performed?
At Associated Plastic Surgeons & Consultants, Dr. Duboys and Dr. Sirota perform nasal surgery in their in-office operating room, a state-of-the-art facility that is fully approved by the American Association for the Accreditation of Surgery Facilities (AAAASF) for class A/B/C surgical procedures.

What form of anesthesia is nasal surgery performed with?
Dr. Duboys and Dr. Sirota usually perform nasal surgery with local anesthesia and light sedation or with general anesthesia.

How is nasal surgery performed?
Nasal surgery begins by making incisions, most of which are made on the inside of the nose though an additional small incision may be made on the area between the nostrils. Working through the incisions, the desired shape is achieved by sculpting the bone and cartilage.

How long is the surgical time for nasal surgery?
Nasal surgery takes an average of one to two hours to perform.

Where are the incisions made for nasal surgery?
For most cases of nasal surgery, Dr. Duboys and Dr. Sirota can confine the majority of the incisions to the inside of the nose. In some cases, however, a small incision must be made on the area of skin between the nostrils.

Are there scars after nasal surgery?
When the incisions are made on the inside of the nose, nasal surgery results in no visible scarring. Incisions made on the area of skin between the nostrils will result in a small scar though it is in a well-concealed location.

How much pain is associated with nasal surgery?
There is usually some discomfort following nasal surgery. During the first few days, the head and nose may ache a bit. Medication can be prescribed to help manage this.

What sort of recovery is there after nasal surgery?
After nasal surgery, a splint is applied to the nose which will be removed after one to two weeks. Patients can expect some swelling and bruising, especially around the eyes. After about two weeks, most of the swelling should be resolved.

How soon after nasal surgery can patients return to their work?
Most patients are able to return to work and most other normal activities within one to two weeks of undergoing nasal surgery.
