Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation, also referred to as Breast Enlargement, Breast Enhancement or Augmentation Mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to increase the size of the breasts.  The surgery involves the placement of a breast implant, sometimes in front (retromammary), but usually behind the muscle (retromuscular) to increase your cup-size.

Most women who seek Breast Augmentation do so to increase the size of the breasts so that they have a fuller, well-proportioned look.  Others seek to increase or to correct a difference in breast volume following pregnancy, while other women may be looking to even out a difference in breast size.  After a thorough consultation and examination, Dr. Duboys will recommend a course of treatment to satisfy your expectations.

Dr.  Duboys typically performs the surgery in his fully certified in-office surgical suite.   This state-of-the-art operating room is fully approved by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities a convenience that is another solid reason to trust Dr. Duboys & Associated Plastic Surgeons & Consultants, PC.

Implant Placement

  • Retromammary:  The implant is placed behind the breast tissue.  This location permits the placement of a larger implant and gives significant fullness to the upper portion of the breast.  Sometimes, by utilizing this location, a minimal amount of ptosis (droop) may be corrected.
  • Retromuscular:  The implant is placed beneath the pectoralis major muscle.  This location gives a more normal appearing breast configuration.  100% of the breast tissue is above the implant.
  • Duel Plane: The surgeon places a portion of the implant beneath the muscle, and a portion above the muscle.  This technique permits elevation of the breast and might obviate the need for a breast lift.

Incision Options

  • Inframammary: The most common incision is one slightly above where the breast joins the chest.  This small incision is usually hidden by all garments and lingerie.  It is the most direct approach to either retromammary or retromuscular placement of the implant.
  • Periareolar:  An incision around the areola permits placement of most implants.  This incision may interfere with nipple sensation and nursing in the future.  A woman must have a relatively large areola for placement of silicone implants.
  • Transaxillary: The armpit incision.  While one would think this scar is camouflaged, frequently this scar widens and is visible when wearing a sleeveless blouse.
  • Periumbilical:  A small incision made around the belly button.  Dr. Duboys prefers not to use this incision and he will explain all the details during your consultation.

Implant Types

  • Saline implants:  This implant has a silicone outer envelope that is filled with saline during your procedure.  As the implant is placed while empty, a small incision may be used.  Saline implants have a failure rate of 10% per year and, in theory, will have to be replaced every 10 years.
  • Silicone implants:  Unlike a saline implant, this implant comes pre-filled and, therefore, a slightly larger incision must be used.  This implant has a silicone outer envelope and is filled with a cohesive silicone gel.

During your consultation, Dr. Duboys will discuss the pros and cons of each incision, implant placement, and types of implants.
