Breast augmentation is usually done to balance a difference in breast size, to improve body contour, or as a reconstructive technique following surgery
|
Breast augmentation, also referred to as breast enlargement, breast enhancement or augmentation mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to increase the size of the breasts. The surgery involves the placement of a breast implant, usually behind the muscle to increase the cup-size.
Most women seek breast augmentation because they feel their breasts are too small or to correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy while other women may be looking to even out a difference in breast size. Those considering breast augmentation must be physically healthy, psychologically stable and realistic in their expectations. After a thorough consultation and examination, Dr. Duboys or Dr. Sirota will recommend a course of treatment to satisfy your expectations.
Dr. Duboys and Dr. Sirota typically perform breast augmentation at their in-office surgical facility at Associated Plastic Surgeons. This is a state-of-the-art operating room that is fully approved by the American Association for Accreditation of Surgery Facilities (AAAASF). Breast augmentation usually takes one hour to complete and is performed under general anesthesia. Incisions may be located in the crease beneath the breast, around the areola, or in the armpit. The doctors will make every effort possible to assure that the incision and resulting scar are as inconspicuous as possible.

Incisions are made to keep scars as inconspicuous as possible. Incisions are placed in the breast crease, around the nipple or the axilla. Breast tissue is then lifted to create a pocket for each implant. |
Two types of implants are currently available. Both the saline and silicone implants have a silicone outer shell that is filled with either saline or silicone respectively. During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss the pros and cons of each implant.
The exact nature of your surgery will depend on your body habitus. In general, your surgeon will work through the recommended incision to create a pocket for the insertion of the implant. The implant may be placed either directly underneath the breast, or, more frequently, beneath the pectoralis (chest) muscle. The placement that is right for you will depend on your individual anatomy and current breast configuration. Dressings applied after surgery are typically removed within several days. Swelling is common after surgery and typically resolves within several months. Other side effects may include a temporary burning sensation of the nipples or a loss of sensation in the nipples and breast skin. Medication may be prescribed to help manage any discomfort or soreness that occurs. Patients usually feel well enough to return to work within a few days after surgery.
Breast augmentation can be a very satisfying and rewarding experience, that will improve both the appearance of your breasts and self confidence.

The breast implant may be inserted directly under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle. |

After surgery, breasts appear fuller and more natural in tone and contour. Scars will fade with time. |
