Forehead Lift FAQs

What is a forehead lift?
The forehead lift, or browlift as it is also known, is a procedure which can improve a drooping brow and horizontal lines and furrows on the forehead in order to restore a more youthful and refreshed appearance. During the surgery, the muscles and tissues of the forehead are removed or altered and the forehead skin is tightened.

Who is a candidate for a forehead lift?
Candidates for the forehead lift include men and women who are looking to improve the appearance of a heavy brow and furrowed forehead lines. It's also important that forehead lift candidates by in good physical health, psychologically stable and have realistic expectations.

What occurs during a consultation for a forehead lift?
During the consultation for a forehead lift, you will meet with either Dr. Duboys or Dr. Sirota. After carefully examining your forehead, the doctor will discuss your expectations and the possibilities available to you. All details of the forehead lift procedure will be explained and any questions that you have answered.

Where is the forehead lift performed?
At Associated Plastic Surgeons & Consultants, Dr. Duboys and Dr. Sirota often perform the forehead lift in their in-office operating room, a state-of-the-art facility that is fully approved by the American Association for the Accreditation of Surgery Facilities (AAAASF) for class A/B/C surgical procedures.

What form of anesthesia is the forehead lift performed with?
Dr. Duboys and Dr. Sirota usually perform the forehead lift with local anesthesia and sedation. In some cases, general anesthesia may be used instead.

How is the forehead lift surgery performed?
The forehead lift surgery begins by making incisions. For a traditional lift, the incisions is made across the top of the head just behind the hairline. For a less invasive endoscopic lift, several small incisions are made within the hairline. Working through the incisions, the forehead skin is lifted, underlying tissues and muscles are removed or altered, and the eyebrows may be elevated. Excess skin is then removed and the incisions are closed.

How long is the surgical time for the forehead lift?
Forehead lift surgery takes an average of one to two hours to perform.

Where are the incisions made for the forehead lift?
Fore a traditional forehead lift, an incision is made just behind the hairline across the top of the head. For an endoscopic forehead lift, several small incisions are made within the hairline.

Are there scars after a forehead lift?
The incisions made for the forehead lift will result in scars though they tend to be well concealed behind the hairline. The endoscopic forehead lift involves less extensive incisions and scarring.

How much pain is associated with the forehead lift?
There is usually some discomfort that can be expected following the forehead lift. Medication can be prescribed to help alleviate this.

What sort of recovery is there after a forehead lift?
After the forehead lift, bandages may be applied to the forehead which will be removed after a day or two. Patients can expect some swelling which you can help to alleviate by keeping the head elevated for the first two to three days after surgery. It will take a week or so for the majority of swelling to fade. Patients may also experience some temporary numbness and discomfort or itching around the incisions. Endoscopic patients generally experience a less involved and shorter recovery.

How soon after forehead lift surgery can patients return to their work?
Most patients are able to return to work and most other normal activities within seven to ten days after undergoing a forehead lift. Endoscopic patients may be able to do so sooner.
