What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast Augmentation Benefits
There are many reasons why women choose to have their breasts augmented, whether because of post-pregnancy concerns or just to feel more confident. These benefits include:
- Increasing size to look more symmetrical
- Restoring shape after pregnancy
- Correcting size differences between breasts
Breast Augmentation Procedure
After a thorough consultation and examination, Dr. Elliot Duboys will recommend an appropriate treatment for you. The breast augmentation procedure takes about one hour and involves placement of an implant (silicone or saline) beneath the muscle. This is made through an incision beneath the breast or around the nipple. The surgery is typically performed with general anesthesia to keep the patient as comfortable as possible. After the procedure, you will be in recovery until you are ready to be discharged.

Saline vs Silicone
Breast Implants come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, desired texture, and material used. All options are FDA approved with a clinically proven safety record. There are two types of implants used, saline (salt water) and silicone gel. Both come in a various profile rounds, which describe the relationship between the diameter (width), and height (projection) of the implant. Newer silicone-based implants can also be anatomic or teardrop shaped. The outer shell of the implants can be either smooth or textured.
Saline Implants: This implant has a silicone outer envelope that the doctor fills with saline during the procedure. A small incision is made, and the implant is placed while empty. Saline implants have a failure rate of 10% per year and will have to be replaced every 10 years.
Silicone Implants: Unlike a saline implant, this implant has a silicone outer envelope and comes pre-filled with a cohesive silicone gel. Therefore, the doctor has to make a slightly larger incision to place the implant.
Are Breast Implants Safe?
There are many women who have had silicone breast implants with no issues. Breast implant surgery is a safe procedure and should be performed by a certified surgeon. When this is followed, there is a minimal chance of complications. Following instructions during recovery also lowers risks.
Breast Implant Sizes
There are many factors that go into deciding what size implant to use: current body shape, desired body type, as well as what your body can handle. Our sizes range from very small to very large. We will help you decide what is best for your body. Even though you can use software to create photos to portray the end result, but we still recommend trying on the implants in a variety of clothing.
What Is The Keller Funnel Method?
Dr. Duboys uses the Keller Funnel Method when implanting silicone breast implants. This technique involves a one-time use cone that will allow for the implant to gently transition from the funneling device into position inside the breast. Some of the benefits of this process include minimal trauma to the breast tissue, shorter and more comfortable recovery time, and a reduction in risk of scaring and capsule formation.
Breast Implant Placements
- Retromammary: The implant is placed behind the breast tissue. This location permits the placement of a larger implant and gives significant fullness to the upper portion of the breast.
- Neuromuscular: The implant is placed beneath the pectoralis major muscle. This location gives a more normal-appearing breast configuration. 100% of the breast tissue is above the implant.
- Dual Plane: The surgeon places a portion of the implant beneath the muscle, and above the muscle. This technique might prevent the need for a breast lift.
Breast Implant Incisions
- Inframammary: The most common incision is one slightly above where the breast joins the chest. This incision option is usually hidden by all garments and lingerie.
- Periareolar: An incision around the areola permits the placement of most implants. This incision may interfere with nipple sensation and nursing in the future.
- Transaxillary: The armpit incision. While one would think this scar blends in, this scar widens and is visible when wearing a sleeveless blouse.
- Periumbilical: A small incision made around the belly button.
The incisions made for Breast Augmentation do result in scars. However, the doctors make special efforts to ensure that the incisions and resulting scars are as inconspicuous as possible.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
As with any surgery, the patient can usually expect some discomfort. In particular, patients may feel sore during the first few days. You will be provided with prescription medications to minimize your discomfort. After your breast augmentation, dressings will be applied to the breasts. Within several days of the procedure, the doctor will remove the dressings. You can expect some amount of swelling following the surgery, which will subside within about three to five weeks. A bra or support bra will need to be worn for a period of time.
We do not recommend exercise for about 4-6 weeks. Most patients are able to return to work and most other normal activities within a week.
Breast Augmentation Results
For around two weeks after the procedure has taken place, there will be some swelling and bruising. During this time, your breasts may appear slightly larger than you wanted, but fear not, for this is normal. In the following weeks and months, the implants will find their correct position. Therefore, while you will have a good idea what you will look like, the patient should expect the final results in a few months after the operation.

Can I Breastfeed After Receiving Breast Implants?
Yes, there should be no effect on your ability to breastfeed. We do caution patients that some women simply can not breastfeed, regardless of whether or not they have implants. This happens because there is just not enough breast tissue to produce milk. There are certainly no health concerns for you or your baby if you breastfeed with breast implants.
Will Breast Implants Affect My Mammogram?
When having a mammogram, you should advise the technician that you have implants. You might require an additional view to make sure that all breast tissue is being seen.
Where Is the Surgery Performed?
The doctor will perform the surgery in his fully certified in-office surgical suite. This state-of-the-art operating room is fully accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities a convenience that is another solid reason to trust Dr. Duboys & Associated Plastic Surgeons & Consultants, PC. If you want, the procedure may be performed in one of the local hospitals.
Why Is It Important To Have a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon?
Plastic surgeons should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). With this, you can be sure that your doctor provides quality care and practice techniques that will ensure your safety. Dr. Duboys is fully certified by the ABPS. Should you decide to “shop around” always ask your surgery if he/she can perform the procedure in a hospital. Any surgeon in the United States can perform breast augmentation, but only those certified as Plastic Surgeons can do it in a hospital.
