What Is A Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?

The Tummy Tuck (abdominoplasty), is a cosmetic surgical procedure in Long Island that is designed to reduce the size and appearance of a protruding abdomen. Dr. Elliot B. Duboys and his team have been providing patients in Huntington, Long Island and surrounding areas with leading cosmetic surgery procedures for over 30 years. If you have been considering a tummy tuck, or would like to learn more – we are here to help!

Am I A Candidate For A Tummy Tuck?

The ideal candidate is an individual who is at their “realistic weight.” While not necessarily “ideal” weight, the perfect candidate has tried, through exercise and diet, to achieve a weight that they can “live with”. Abdominoplasty surgery is not a substitute for weight loss, and, as a matter of fact, the typical Abdominoplasty patient will not lose a significant amount of weight following the surgery.

It’s also important that Tummy Tuck candidates be in good physical health and have realistic expectations. Tummy Tuck is most effective on individuals who, though in relatively good health, are bothered by abdominal contour deformities or loose abdominal skin that remains unaffected by diet and exercise. A tummy tuck can be particularly beneficial for women who have been pregnant with stretched muscles and skin. During your consultation, Dr. Duboys after carefully examining your abdomen, will discuss your expectations and the possibilities available. All details of the procedure will be explained and any questions that you have answered.

Why Choose Abdominoplasty Surgery?

There are many reasons why people choose to undergo a tummy tuck procedure, some include:

  • Pregnancy(s)
  • Stretch marks
  • Weight loss
  • Protruding skin over pants
  • Unhappy with appearance in clothing

Tummy Tuck Surgery

During this procedure, excess skin and fat are removed and the muscles of the abdominal wall tightened. The procedure usually takes between two and three hours to complete, though a mini-Abdominoplasty may take just an hour or two. The incision for a Tummy Tuck is located just above the pubic area.

Associated Plastic Surgeons also offers a less invasive version of this procedure called the Mini Tummy Tuck. The Mini Tummy Tuck is a less extensive procedure reserved for patients with excess skin fat deposits limited to the area below the navel. A shorter incision may be used for a partial or Mini-Abdominoplasty.

The exact nature of the surgery will depend on your body habitus. In general, the underlying muscles and tissue are drawn together and sutured to contour your waist and strengthen the abdominal wall. Excess skin is removed and a new opening is made for your umbilicus. Dressings will be applied to the surgical site after your procedure that are held in place by a support garment. Swelling is common during the first few days.

Is Anesthesia Used In An Abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

A certain amount of pain is to be expected following a tummy tuck. Your doctor will prescribe adequate pain medication to afford comfortable relief during the post-operative period. Dr. Duboys will discuss placement of a pain-pump during surgery which will decrease the pain to a minimum. Medication will be prescribed to help control any pain or discomfort. Frequently, a “pain-pump” is used that will reduce most of the discomfort associated with the procedure. Most patients feel well enough to return to work after one or two weeks.
