What Is a Breast Lift?

Breast Lift, or Mastopexy, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to improve the appearance of sagging breasts that result from pregnancy, age, genetics, or weight loss.  The surgery seeks to elevate and reshape the breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning the breast tissue and nipples.

During surgery, Dr. Duboys may choose to reduce the size of the areolas if enlarged. A breast lift procedure will not enhance the overall volume of the breast and your cup size should remain constant. If you are seeking to have your bust line enhanced, you may want to consider breast augmentation.

Breast lift procedures are personalized to each patient to achieve results that look natural and proportionate to the body frame. Improvements that may be achieved with this procedure include:

  • A refined shape that is perkier, firmer, and fuller
  • Better proportions between the areolas and overall breast size

Am I a Good Candidate?

Candidates for breast lift surgery include women who are looking to improve the appearance of sagging breasts. It’s also important that breast lift candidates be in good physical health, psychologically stable, and have realistic expectations.  You may be advised to postpone surgery if you are planning a future pregnancy.

Any woman seeking an improvement in the contour of their breast is a good candidate! Some of the common reasons to consider breast lift surgery include:

  • Breast size is adequate but breast shape has become droopy.
  • Breasts have lost fullness.
  • Nipples have dropped to a downward position or lie below the crease of the breasts.

Statistics suggest that women with smaller breasts may achieve satisfactory results with a breast lift alone. Women with heavier or larger breasts may experience a decline in breast shape sooner than those with smaller breasts. A mastopexy may also be most successful after childbearing, as future pregnancies will affect breast tissue.

Breast Lift Benefits

Breast lift surgery achieves a number of objectives besides elevating the breasts to appear perkier. Additional benefits that patients enjoy include:

  • Elimination of sagging and extreme ptosis (downward-facing nipples).
  • Improved breast symmetry.
  • Younger-looking breasts.

Preparing for Breast Lift Surgery

Prior to breast lift surgery, patients will receive complete instructions regarding preparatory steps. Generally, surgeons request that patients:

  • avoid tobacco use, quitting smoking several weeks before surgery.
  • avoid medications that may thin the blood.
  • Be in optimal health.
  • Limit alcohol consumption or avoid alcoholic beverages in the days before surgery.

In addition to preparing for surgery, patients also need to prepare for recovery. Common suggestions include:

  • Arrange for a caregiver to provide in-home care for 24 to 48 hours after surgery.
  • Prepare easy meals ahead of time to eliminate the chore of cooking the first few days after surgery.
  • Set the home up as a comfortable recovery center in which blankets, pillows, medications, and entertainment are within reach.
  • Arrange adequate time off from work based on the surgeon’s estimated recovery period.

Breast Lift Procedure

Following careful evaluation, Dr. Duboys will discuss your options and the procedure he recommends. The procedure can take between one and three hours to complete and is commonly performed under general anesthesia.   Incisions depend upon the recommended procedure.   Large, pendulous breasts require an incision shaped like an anchor, while a less extensive incision may be made for women with smaller breasts and minimal sagging. The exact nature of Breast Lift surgery will vary for each patient. In general, excess skin is removed and the nipple and areola are moved to a higher position.

Recovery

Breast Augmentation | Associated Plastic Surgeons | Long Island, NY
Patients will need to wear a surgical bra after surgery for a period of time.  Swelling and bruising are common and some temporary numbness may also occur.  Medication will be prescribed to help alleviate discomfort.  Patients usually feel well enough to return to work and other normal activities within about one to two weeks after the Breast Lift. Should you desire a fuller breast, an implant may be recommended and placed simultaneously with a Mastopexy.

Breast Lift Results

Patients can expect to notice the results of their breast lift almost immediately after their procedure. Because swelling is a normal side effect of surgery, the shape of the breasts will change over the course of a few months as tissues heal. Incisions also fade over time, leading to highly satisfactory results. The new look of your breasts can be maintained for several years with healthy lifestyle habits that support weight management.

"Dr. Duboys is one of the nicest doctors I have ever met! He took the time to educate me on different techniques and Methods. I am ecstatic about my results! I will be back soon." - Renee R.
