Brow / Forehead Lift

The forehead lift, or brow lift, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to restore a more youthful and refreshed appearance to the forehead and brow area.  The surgery smoothes the brow, elevating a drooping brow and may reduce horizontal lines and furrows, by removing or altering the muscles and tissues of the forehead and tightening the forehead skin.

During your consultation, Dr. Duboys or Dr. Sirota will carefully examine your face and forehead during your consultation and discuss the possibilities available to you.  It’s important that you discuss your expectations in detail at this time.

The procedure is typically performed at our in-office surgical that is fully approved by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical  Facilities (AAAASF).  Surgery usually takes one to two hours to complete and is often performed with local anesthesia and sedation, though general anesthesia may be used instead.  The incision for a traditional forehead lift is usually made across the top of the head and hidden just behind the hairline.  For a less-invasive endoscopic forehead lift, several small incisions are typically made within the hairline.  Frequently a brow lift is combined with blepharoplasty or rhytidectomy (facelift).

In preparation for a forehead lift, the hair is tied back with rubber bands in front of and behind the incision area. An incision is usually made across the top of the head, just behind the hairline.

The exact nature of the forehead lift surgery will vary for each patient.  In general, however, underlying tissue is removed, the forehead muscles are altered or released, the eyebrows elevated, and excess skin is removed.  Bandages may be applied to the forehead after surgery which will remain in place for about a day or two.  Some swelling is common and can be alleviated by elevating the head for the first two to three days after surgery.  Most swelling will begin to fade within a week or so.  Other temporary side effects may include numbness and incision discomfort or itching.  Medication can be prescribed to help with any discomfort that occurs.  Patients typically feel well enough to return to work within seven to ten days after the forehead lift, sometimes sooner for endoscopic patients.  The overall recovery after the endoscopic forehead lift is generally more rapid than a  traditional lift.

The forehead lift can be a very rewarding and pleasing experience.  By improving the early signs of aging of the forehead, patients often experience an improvement in their appearance as well as their self confidence.
