Do You Need Breast Augmentation or Breast Lift (Mastopexy)?
Knowing The Difference Between Procedures
Deciding which surgery will best enhance your breasts is a personal choice that many of our patients face. Dr. Elliot Duboys of Long Island NY is here to explain each step of your decision. To start, it is important to understand the difference between a breast augmentation and a breast lift.
Breast Augmentation:
Breast augmentation patients, generally seek to enlarge the size of their breasts. This is achieved by using saline or silicone breast implants that may be placed behind the breast tissue (retromammary) or beneath the pectoralis major muscle (retromuscular) or a combination of both (dual plane).
Reasons For Breast Augmentation:
- Individual unhappy about the size (volume) of her breasts
- Different sized or asymmetrical breasts
- Difficulty in finding clothing that fits
- Disproportional breasts in relation to the rest of the body
Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
When a women chooses a breast lift (mastopexy), the plastic surgeon will ‘lift’ the breast restoring the breast to its proper location. Then, the any excess skin will be tightened and a rounder, perkier shape created.
Reasons for Breast Lift :
- The nipples point downward
- Reduction in size of the areola
- Breast positions shift as weight is gained or lost
- Restore breast shape as a result of aging, breast-feeding or genetics
Sometimes patients chose both procedures, to restore both volume and shape that frequently occurs as a result of child birth or aging. Basically, breast augmentation changes the volume of the breast, while Mastopexy (breast lift) changes the contour/shape of the breast.
Now you may be asking yourself, “Which procedure do I want? Or do I want both?” Whether or not you have an idea of how you see yourself looking, Dr. Duboys will walk you through both procedures and explain how you may best benefit.
