The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) has set regulations and standards for surgeons preforming cosmetic surgery.  When you choose a surgeon who is certified by the ABPS you can be confident that he or she meets nationally recognized standards for  education, experience, knowledge and skill – ensuring that they will provide you with the highest quality of care. Board Certification goes beyond basic medical licensure.  The ABPS is the only Board approved by the American Board of Medical Specialities – the main regulating body.

Today,  many plastic surgeons operate in ambulatory surgical facilities that are not owned or governed by the rules of a major hospital.  Always ask your surgeon if he/she can perform the procedure that you are seeking in a hospital environment.  If your doctor gives you a vague answer or says no,  they are not credentialed for that procedure in a hospital, and in all liklihood have not completed a residency in Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery.
